Nerite Snails

Named for their distinct black and gold striping pattern, Zebra Nerite snails are probably the most sought after member of the ever-popular Nerite classification of snails. They are known to be beneficial in the aquarium, as they eat algae almost exclusively. This means they will help to clean an aquarium but very rarely damage aquatic plants. Zebra Nerite Snails are excellent at consuming algae and organics. However in large numbers they will require extra food.

I’ve had a little bit of an algae bloom in my 50 gallon tank, so I purchased 2 Nerite Snails based on a recommendation. I have to say that they are great and a lot more active than I had thought a snail could be.
I highly recommend the Nerite to anyone wanting a snail. They don’t reproduce in freshwater so you won’t have to worry about being overrun with babies.

they do fine without a heater and also are the only option for my daughters goldfish tank I have two of them in a 10 gallon tank. So far they are working awesome I may have to get one more it is a waiting game they said to give them at least a couple of weeks and then see.

I just bought a few of these nerite snails today to help my Mystery snail with an algae bloom in my 30 gallon aquarium. I have a colosseum ornament that I have had for so many years, that I forgot it was white until these cute little critters got to work. They are far better at cleaning algae than my mystery snail. I am so impressed!

I’ve purchased two nerites an olive and a zebra. The olive is great no problems, the zebra came from the store in the same manner as most the other invertebrates, riddled with parasites. Today I was watching it on the front of the tank when I noticed white worms coming out of the shell damage it came with. Would recommend the breed won’t recommend purchasing from my local retail chains. They need a new supplier if the emails don’t show up dead they show up with parasites.

I bought one of the zebra nerite snails a few days ago for my new aquarium and I love him already. So much fun to watch him slowly move around the tank and crawl around on the decor. He gets along with my male betta too. I have them both in a 3.5 gallon aquarium.

I only ordered two and as usual, AquascapePH was very charitable with freebies. There are some issues with other literature that they leave a trail of white dots. That’s them laying eggs as part of their reproductive cycle. In freshwater, they don’t hatch and are not harmful. Even in rare instances that they do hatch, the larvae won’t survive in freshwater. In my case, I haven’t actually seen them do this. Maybe my tank is not conducive for their reproduction like having not much algae to begin with (so less nutrition for them). Or I got lucky and only got “purely” Male ones. Yup, the Nerite snails are NOT asexual like other snails. If I do see it laying eggs, I just need to verify that it’s a Female (without skinfold at base of right antenna), and remove it. So just keep Male ones if you don’t want to see these white spots.

The snail I received does not look the same in photo at all. I received a black snail. The shrimps at tiny for the price I paid. I got same shrimp at the other store, at cheaper price and twice the size.
